The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, Old City Ahmedabad

Image
The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is a sublime ode in stone to the extraordinary architectural legacy of the African Diaspora in India. Although their Forefathers were originally brought to India as slaves and maritime laborers, the descendants of these Africans rose to positions of positions of power as military commanders in the armies of the sultans and became great patrons of art and architecture. Situated in the heart of the 600 year old walled city of Ahmedabad, the design of the mosque is entirely in the arcuate system of construction, involving arches , domes, Squinches and vaults.

The historic Architecture of the city of the 15th century Sultanate period exhibited an important interchange of human values over its span of time which truly reflected the culture of the ruling migrant communities. The settlement planning was based on the respective tenets of human values and mutually accepted norms of community living and sharing. Its monumental buildings representative of the religious philosophy exemplified the best of the crafts and technology which saw growth of an important regional Sultanate architectural expression that is unparalleled in India. In order to establish their dominance in the region, the  Sultanate rulers recycled the parts and elements of local religious buildings to reassemble those into building of mosques in the city.

Ajanta Caves, Maharashtra

Although the Ajanta and Ellora caves are in the same district of Aurangabad, and in the same state of Maharashtra, they are quite far away from each other. The Ajanta Caves , on the other hand, are located over 100kms away from Aurangabad. These Caves are cited as some of the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian Art. I visited The Ajanta Caves first, and I have to say, the Ajanta Caves made a stronger first impression on me. The caves in Ajanta are absolutely stunning. I was in Disbelief while walking around the complex, and 3.5 hours went by so fast- it was hard to Leave! I checked out every single caves and found something interesting or different in almost every one of them.

Ellora Caves, Maharashtra

The Famous Ellora Caves are a set of ancient rock cave monuments located in the Aurangabad district Maharashtra. These Caves are some of the most mind-blowing things i have ever seen, but in some ways, are quite similar to each other. Ellora Caves is one of the largest rock-cut Hindu temple cave complexes in the world. Its crown jewel is the Kailash Temple, a jaw-dropping cave dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva.
